Our Yearbook Image

Alex (Smith) Steelsmith has asked that I share his story of the image on the cover of our yearbook. I never knew this. Thanks for sharing it, Alex!

From @Alex S:

Seeing the yearbook on the reunion website reminded me of an interesting story about the cover from 50 years ago. I recall that one day Mrs. Anne Smith, the art teacher, suggested that we paint an image of an Indian for a potential yearbook cover.

I was honored when my painting was later chosen, but when the yearbook came out I was surprised that the image had somehow gotten “reversed” (like a photo negative). I never found out how it happened, but I assumed it was an accident.

Back then, reproductions were often made photographically, and it would’ve been an easy mistake to make—to use a negative of the photo rather than the correct image.  I’d like to send…

I never knew who created the artwork for the yearbook cover and the original version does have much more detail. Thank you for sharing this story, John & Alex!

Fondest memories of high school years

My fondest memories are of all the events held on the fields and especially the gym – basketball games, dances, proms. It seemed like it was always packed! I also remember the fun we had getting together and preparing for our big events, decorating the halls and gym for Sophomore Ball, and Junior Prom. And of course I have to call out my prom queen, Darlene (Denton) Cardinal!

I have never forgotten Sunday night films with the football team, and the rattling of the metal film canisters being slammed on a desk by Coach Bolin, unhappy with the play we just watched. Often shouting, “Rickeee!!!” 😊

On the disappointing side - our class had a different schedule for each year (9th: full day, 10th: ½ day afternoon, 11th: ½ day morning, 12th: extended day/open campus).
